Initial Setup

Each website is different. It is important to understand where your website lacks before we decide what needs to be done for it. Our initial site setup is very logical and target oriented.

Initial Site Analysis / Health Check-up:
Before starting with any SEO work, it is vital to check a few points that examine the quality and health of the site.

  1. Does the website have any canonical issues?
If a website has both the www and non-www versions working, the situation is then termed as a canonical issue. Search engines consider websites with canonical issues as low value sites, which ultimately affects search engine ranks.
This is primarily because search engines find two duplicate versions of the same website using the www and non-www versions. Canonical issues should therefore be solved for improved search engine response and better search result ranks.
E.g. http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com should both redirect to http://www.domain.com – showing search engines one single URL for the domain.
  2. Are there more than one URL pointing to the same webpage content?
Search engines prefer websites that present fresh and unique content. Often websites have more than one URL featuring the same content. This makes search engines find duplicate content on your website’s domain and your site is noted to be of poor quality. This harms keyword ranking for your site, which is why pages with duplicate contents should be removed.
  3. Does the site have optimized Meta Information and Titles for each page?
Each page should have optimized Meta information and Titles. The selected keywords should be injected into the Titles, Meta descriptions and Meta keywords. All the Titles and Meta Descriptions should be unique and clearly talk about the content of the page. This helps search engines index pages categorically for relevant keywords, which ultimately helps with search engine ranks.
  4. Is the on-page content structured properly for search engines (H1, H2, H3 and similar tags)?
The webpage content should be presented in such a way that search engines find it easy to index the content. The proper use of the Header Tags (H1, H2, H3, etc) with the keywords injected makes search engines easily index web-pages for the relevant keywords.
  5. How well is the content placed on the pages compared to the code used?
Web-pages should be structured to present the content to search engines before coding and scripts. View the source code of a web-page. Search engines should find the keyword injected website copy higher up in the source code for the best results. The coding and the page structure needs to be adjusted accordingly.
  6. Are there duplicate content issues on any of the pages?
If any section or part of a web-page contains a significant amount of content that is present elsewhere, it should be removed or re-written. Duplicate content acts against websites, bringing their ranks down and making them look less authentic to search engines.
  7. Do all the images have optimized alt tags and titles set for them?
All pictures should be backed by appropriate alt tags to attach the relevant and targeted keywords to the images used.
  8. Does the site have a blog?
Good blog posts help in driving a huge amount of traffic to websites. The presence of a blog ensures that the website is getting a regular dose of fresh content. This encourages search engine spiders to visit the website more often, helping in the web-pages to get indexed. Therefore if a website lacks a blog, a blog should be installed to it for the best results.
  9. Does the site use Flash and Frames?
Search engines are yet to learn how to read flash and frames on web-pages. Flash and frames add to the amount of code present on a site that is completely unreadable to search engines. However, special techniques can be implemented to optimize flash and frames to help web-pages with such content get indexed on search engines and climb up the keyword ranks. Therefore if a web-page has a lot of flash content and frames, we need to optimize such content for the best results with SEO.
  10. How long does the site take to load?
The faster a website loads, the better it is for the website. Search engines have been found to favor websites that load quickly. Fast loading sites also mean a richer visitor experience. It is important to be careful about how fast your site loads and what can be done to improve its load time.
  11. Does the site pass a validation test and are there any broken links?
An errorless site ensures better user experience and better search engine response. Therefore it is important to run a HTML validation test for your website and see if it passes the test. In case the test results errors, such issues need to be solved.
A validation test will also let you know if there are any broken links present in your website. Broken links need to be removed or edited. Search engine crawlers do not like broken links (links to other pages that don’t exist anymore) and this can affect your search engine ranking. Broken links prove to be an annoyance for visitors as well when they are directed to a 404 error page.
  12. How healthy is the HTML code to content ratio?
If your web-pages contain a high amount of code as compared to the readable content, then you must bring down the amount of code and/or increase the content. A high amount of code makes it difficult for search engines to index your content and the keywords it holds. This ratio needs to be optimized for the best results.
On-page scripts, Tables, Frames, CSS, etc. should be called from external sheets or files. This reduces the volume of code used on a web-page.
  13. Are the URLs used in the website optimized?
It proves to be beneficial for your website when add relevant keywords and key phrases to your URLs. Keyword optimized URLs help search engines to successfully categorize your web page content according to keyword relevancy.
  14. Does the site have a customized 404 Error Page?
Visitors often type URLs incorrectly, which ultimately takes them to a 404 Error page. The default 404 Error page provides very little information on why the visitor has landed on that page. It is possible to customize the 404 Error Page to present your visitors with more information than what is presented on the default page. A well customized error page targeted at retaining visitors on the website and driving them to the most important pages of the website.
You may also present sitemaps, relevant links to service pages or other targeted content on the custom error page. The intention should be to retain the visitor without letting them get annoyed and try looking for a different site for the same information they are after.
  15. Does the site have updated robots.txt, HTML sitemap and XML sitemap uploaded to the server?
The presence of HTML and XML sitemaps help search engines in indexing the website pages quickly and more efficiently. The robots.txt file helps search engine spiders understand which folders they are privileged to crawl and which folders should remain untouched.
  16. Do the hosting details make the site SEO friendly (IP, Location, Shared hosting, age of site, etc.)
Hosting details including domain age, server location, type of hosting (shared, dedicated) etc. make a difference in how search engines react to websites. All these factors should be checked and optimized where possible without making any drastic changes.
  17. Are Google Analytics and Webmasters set for the site?
It is important to track the results of the SEO work we do for any website. This helps with measuring the efforts and investments put in and the success rate seen as a result of it. Google Analytics and Webmasters help us with such analytical data to understand our progress and performance.
  18. How popular is the website (and the business) over the various social media platforms?
A business becomes more authentic when it is present on Social Media Sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Online visitors are quite choosy these days when dealing with a business because of the abundant options they are presented with. Therefore, if a website is not present on Social Media Sites, it is a good idea to promote it on such sites for better results with traffic and conversions.
  19. How many web-pages are indexed on Google and other popular search engines?
It is important to get your pages indexed on Google and the other popular search engines. When your site has a large number of pages indexed on search engines, it is easier to get your site optimized and rank for the keywords that you have chosen to work with. It is therefore important to check the number of pages indexed on the various search engines. We will submit your site to the various popular search engines to help your web-pages get indexed.
  20. How many sites link back to the site (number of backlinks)?
The number and the quality of the sites linking back to your website is also an important point to consider. The more number of backlinks your site enjoys, the better it is for search engine rankings. The results are seen to be even better if the backlinks are from high quality sites and directories. We will check the quality of backlinks to your sites and work on it to show you better results.

Competition Analysis

Checking out what the most successful businesses are doing often opens up new ideas and shows you new paths to success. This is exactly what we do through the competition analysis phase.

  • Identify your major competitors:
It is important to recognize your top competitors who are doing well in the industry. Learning about the most successful competitors helps us evaluate where your website stands and what can be the most successful strategies to be implemented to show you success with SEO.
  • Business Analysis:
Studying your competitors let us understand your business and the industry better. It helps us determine the techniques that have shown success to other business. It also helps us understand where others may have gone wrong and they may be missing out. All this adds up to provide us with the perfect strategy to work with for your business.
  • Website Analysis:
We go through a thorough examination of the competitors’ websites to check what tools and resources they have used. We make a detailed analysis of their websites, directories and social media platforms they have implemented. We measure the effectiveness of all these resources and tools and then put to use the most useful ones in this list.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is probably the most important part of the SEO process. Understanding the right keywords to be implemented is the secret to seeing successful SEO results, more conversions and a higher ROI.

Once we have been through all the analytics and understand the target audience and the business requirements, it is the time to get hold of the right keywords that will be used on the site. We follow a simple (and yet complex) procedure to understand what the best keywords to work with are.

  1. We analyze all the data we have in hand and set clear and highly targeted objectives
  2. We scrutinize the content as minutely as possible
  3. We categorize existing pages and identify the key terms that have already been implemented
  4. An effective keyword research tool is then put to work which points out at the perfect keywords (and negative keywords) to be used for the site (based on the website content and the analytical data we have gathered)
  5. The most important keywords are then scrubbed and categorized as per relevancy

Setting up the Platform

The next step would be to setup the initial grounds for the SEO campaign. This will include:

  1. Setting up a Google Account for the business
  2. Installing Google Analytics and Webmasters in the site
  3. Creating the robots.txt file
  4. Creating the XML and HTML Sitemaps
  5. Creating other relevant files like urllist.txt and ror.xml that need to be uploaded to the server

Google Analytics and Webmasters tools help with tracking the results of the SEO work we do. This includes traffic, conversions, content quality, visitor behavior and profile, and a number of other points. Such data helps us with fine tuning and improving our techniques to get more out of our efforts. This ensures improving the ROI and resource optimization.

Note: The sitemaps and the files mentioned in point 5 need to be updated time to time depending on the changes made to the website.

Targeted Page Selection
There is just one more step to cross before we finally start with our SEO work. Here we identify the targeted pages that we will be working with for the selected keywords. This lets us effectively map pages to the selected keywords, include them in the meta descriptions, titles and page content.

In case it is not possible to come up with relevant pages for all the selected keywords (without drastically changing the content), we suggest on creating new pages for the website.

On-Page Corrections

Once the ground work for your site has been done, now is the time to power it up through various on page activities and optimization techniques.
